Designing for ultra-low-power wireless sensor applications, powered by energy harvesting
Presented by the GreenPeak Academy
1:45-4:45 p.m.

Green Peak is presenting a seminar that is open to all nanoPower Forum registered delegates.  A separate registration fee applies.

Audience: designers, product managers, innovation managers

Abstract:
Ultra-low-power and energy harvesting open the gate to widespread adoption of wireless sensor communication technology. In comparison to traditional mains powered and even low-power applications, designers need to tackle new challenges and design with substantially different design constraints.

In a half day seminar a specialist from GreenPeak will address the key design challenges for ultra-low-power wireless sensor applications. Tips and Tricks will be discussed to arrive at the lowest possible energy consumption. Real life cases (including demo material) will be addressed.

Seminar Outline

  • Why low power wireless sensor networks
  • Power budget breakdown in wireless sensor networks
  • Techniques to reduce power consumption
  • Useful sources of energy with demonstration
  • Case exercise: practical – real-world low-power design for wireless sensor network applications
  • Q&A

Speakers

Wim De Kimpe, CTO GreenPeak Technologies:

Wim De Kimpe is CTO of Greenpeak and has been responsible for the technical strategy and direction of the company since its incorporation early 2004. Wim carries over a decade of engineering and engineering management experience from prior occupations, mainly in the semiconductor industry. As one of the world’s few true experts in Wireless Sensor Networks he has a track record in bringing new technologies to fruition as a technology visionary.  Wim is a contributing member of several technology standardization organizations. He is an MS in electrical engineering from the University of Ghent in Belgium

Niek Van Dierdonck, VP strategy & Product Management:

Niek Van Dierdonck is one of the pioneers in wireless sensor communication. He established the essential market needs back in 1999 through extensive market research and customer surveys. Understanding the lack of suitable technology he founded Ubiwave in 2003. Since then Niek provided leadership to Ubiwave as a CEO, pioneering the field of wireless mesh network protocols. In 2007 Ubiwave was acquired by Xanadu Wireless and renamed to GreenPeak in 2007. Niek is currently VP of Strategy and Product Management at GreenPeak.

Prior to Niek's involvement in the wireless sensor industry, he has been working as a business consultant, first for the corporate strategy consultancy firm The Boston Consultancy Group, later as an independent consultant in the field of high-tech technology venturing and business excellence. His activities included the development of business plans for several spin-off companies of the University of Ghent, Belgium, and the attraction of Venture Capital.

Earlier to his consulting activities, Niek was a manager at IMEC, an electronics research organization in Leuven, Belgium. In that capacity he started and managed the DSP Valley organization, the largest professional network organization within Belgium and The Netherlands in the field of DSP and embedded systems.

Niek Van Dierdonck holds a Master's degree in electronic engineering from the Eidgenössische Technische Hochschule, Zurich, Switzerland, and from the University of Ghent, Belgium. He also holds an MBA degree from the Vlerick School, Belgium.
